Cloning embryonic stem cells

The Todd Feinburg Show - Thursday night 9 pm - 680 AM, Listen Live: http://www.toddradio.com.  Sponsored by the Center for Naturalism.

Cloning: are we doing the work that only God, or natural process, should be doing?

Harvard University is launching an effort to conduct embryonic stem cell research.

Questions for discussion:

  • Embryos: where do they stand on the continuum of life?
  • Do we owe embryos moral regard?
  • Is it acceptable to create life in order to destroy life?

Even supposing someone is on board with the benefits and moral permissibility of this research, we can still ask:

  • Did the government, and particularly Bush, miss the boat by refusing to fund this research?
  • Is the government oblidged to take ALL ethical viewpoints into consideration? The divinely-grounded as well as the empirical?
  • What’s wrong with using only private funding?
