Radio, Naturalism and Sheldon Drobny

Sheldon Drobny is not only a venture capitalist, a philanthropist, a progressive/liberal, and a radio guy, but he’s also a naturalist.  It’s great when seemingly unrelated paths in life converge, and you never know when it’s going to happen…

Drobny was in Boston to talk with folks about buying radio stations to make sure that progressive values were part of the debate as our country tackles our problems and moves forward.  Being both a liberal and a radio girl, I was interested in what he had to say.  I had promised to bring a volunteer, and since the event was sold out, I asked Tom Clark (a recent guest on my radio show) if he wanted to volunteer in order to attend.  He asked who was going to be there, and when I mentioned the Drobnys he was very enthusiastic because of a piece Drobny had recently written on the Huffington Post called Guns Don’t Kill People, People Kill People: The Human Brain.

So we go to the event and to make a long story short, things converged:

  • Anita and Sheldon Drobny, Joe Trippi, John Zogby, Jeff Santos, and Robin Bergman presented how Nova M Radio will get progressive talk on the airways,
  • Tom Clark and Sheldon Drobny found out they are both naturalists and are interested in the progressive implications of this world view,
  • A progressive radio guy named Alan listened to my radio shows on this blog and said very nice things,
  • Sheldon writes Free Will and Naturalism, again on the Huffington Post, quoting from Tom Clark’s book Encountering Naturalism.

It is always a pleasure to meet people who share your world view and your values.  But, it is particularly gratifying to meet people who could, if they wanted to, kick back and bask in their good fortune, not giving anyone else a second thought, but instead live beyond themselves.  But the Drobnys, the Zogby’s, and all the other fortunate folks who are on board with this effort are the kind who look back over their shoulders as they go through life, stopping to find out if there’s a problem, and even walking back to see what’s going on behind them.  If necessary, they’ll even pick up a few people and carry them as they turn around and go forward again.

I love that.

The radio thing can happen in Boston if 5,000 people contribute $10 a month each and a few heavy hitters kick in some more.

Think there are 5,000 people with ten bucks a month in Boston?  Yeah, I thought so.
