Trying to make sense of things by looking at causes and understanding their effects. Using science to discern what's real and relationships to determine what's of value. Curious about everything. www.samanthaclemens.com

Git over it

Cause and Effect World chimes in with Dan Kennedy of Media Nation to give a big hooray to the Massachusetts state legislature for opposing the ballot initiative that would have brought the issue of gay marriage to a vote.  Our view is, the state should not deny adults basic freedoms unless there is a compelling social issue, and the fact that conservatives are uncomfortable with homosexuality does not meet that test.

Now, conservatives can and probably will create a heap of trouble over this, so it is not to say that there isn’t a social cost or strategic considerations to this move.  But, if we can vote about whether gay couples can marry, then we could vote on whether people who can’t have children should get the financial and legal benefits or marriage, or we can vote on marriages - can a citizen marry a non-citizen?  can an inter-racial couple marry?  can widows(ers) or divorcees marry?

In the end, a lot of people are happy today, and we are glad for them.  And for those that are unhappy, well, just go off and stew.  Hopefully you will git over it and find out that the sun still shines, the electrical grid still functions, and life will pretty much go on as usual.
